Pani puri to effective Presentation
I watched this wonderful presentation on slideshare today. This was about Pani Puri. Yes you read it right, it was about Pani Puri. They way the author of the presentation has presented details about this ubiquitous Indian dish is simply relishing. Again this was beautifully blended with technology and it is fun to watch how food and technology can be combined effectively :-). I also had a chance to talk to the author of this presentation, thakkar in the pune blog camp. And I am sure with the personality that he is … I was not surprised with the presentation. Wonderful work I would say .Look at this.

Filed Under UncategorizedIndia Innovates at Innovations 2008
I attended Innovations 2008 (5-6th Jan 2008). An event organized by IIT Bombay Alumni association’s Pune chapter. The day started with Anand Deshpande talking about his ideas why product start-ups are not that successful in India and why are we not able to produce world class products.
The important points that he pointed out were we are weak in identifying product market space, product marketing and managing distribution channels.
He also referred to some good examples from the book Blue Ocean Strategy by W Chan Kim
This was followed by the talk from the keynote speaker for the event, Dr. R.A.Mashelkar. I was pleasantly surprised to know the contribution of Dr. Mashelkar in the field of innovation and there can be a separate blog just on that
He talked about some very interesting aspects of innovation and suggested that in Indian context innovation needs to happen at three different levels which is poor, middle class and rich. And there needs to be different strategies and different vision for each category of innovation to reach the correct segment.
One thing that really touched me was when he said this. ” I am sure India will definitely be an economic and technical superpower, what we also need to make sure is that we are super power in ethics and moral and guide the world with us. We need to think of the poor across the world and not just India and that will make true Indian super power”.
This followed by a session of show casing innovations. Interesting session where we saw innovations from various categories ranging from chemical, mechanical, bio-medicine, IT etc.
Well organized and discipline sessions was a pleasure to watch particularly in India.
I also got a glimpse of IIT way of starting and ending a function. The function began with singing a National Anthem (everybody actually sung it and no playback) and ending with something called Pasaydaan , which was unique and I would wish any Indian function should follow.

Watched Taare Zameen Par yesterday. I could not stop myself writing a review for the film after watching it. Simply fabulous work by Aamir. He again proved that he is an actor, director and more importantly a human being destined to make a difference.
I almost like everything in the movie. The concept to begin with was awesome. The acting, direction, photography, music everything was truly phenomenal.
It also made me happy to think that India is changing and changing for good. More and more people are not heading out for all the good causes. India needs a lot more of this and as fast as possible.
The scene in the movie where aamir asks Ishaan’s dad to read in chinese and again the scene where his dad comes to him to tell him that Ishaan’s mom read everything about the disease on the internet were really touching.
With increasingly competitive world that we live in today, the need of an hour is to realize the importance of creativity and make all attempts to nurture it. It is just creativity and innovation which will help any developing nation like India to make a mark in the world and not the flowing dollars. Of course flowing dollars will help, however we should not forget that in doing so if we just forget the basics, we will soon face talent shortage like many other nations today.
For e.g. look at the science and commerce graduates today. The number of such graduates is decreasing significantly. Also the number of graduates doing work which suites their profile lacks more significantly.
Look at the quality of overall education. It is degrading day by day in lack of good teachers. Schools have started becoming an institution of making money leading to students not getting base knowledge and moral values which are much more important than making money.
We are now in a race of making money and losing moral. Let us all think, act and do something to change this so that the rich India and Indian culture remains intact.

A lot is written about Project Management. If you search any good library or internet you can find articles describing project management and all the best practices. However on the ground I doubt if majority of the principles are put to practice. If they are, I doubt the consistency for the same.
Project Management to me is effectively managing Quality, Cost and Timelines of the project with confidence in your resources.
Some of the key aspects to Project Management are:
· Communication
· Nothing is as important as effective communication in Project Management. Effective communication involves expressing exactly what is required, nothing less nothing more. It also involves listening abilities and non-verbal communication.
· Anyone who can master the art of effective communication already won half the battle in being a successful project manager.
· Communication involves communicating with the Client, team members, peers and associates and all the other related parties.
· Process Simplification
· Processes are a key ingredient of a successful project. However over-do of processes are the key to many project failures. There is therefore a need to identify processes which works best for the given project and more importantly making sure that consistency is then maintained in adhering to the tailor made process.
· Traceability
· Tracking the progress of the project as frequently as possible helps avoiding any surprises. One simple yet effective technique that works is to have weekly status meeting with focused agenda. The meeting should just concentrate on the action items, pending items, risks and issues. Once identified the risks and issues should be communicated to the stake holders. This helps all the stake holders up-to date with the current situation and avoids any surprises at the later stages.
· Incubating Innovation
· One of the important function of a project manager is to promote innovation. This is not directly related to the delivery of the project. However there are lot of innovative minds at work during the project. And many a times some of these innovations change the entire way of project execution.
· Team Identity
Project Management is lot about collaboration. If every team member realizes the objectives and responsibilities within the project, project execution becomes a lot easier. Every individual should be made aware of his/her objectives and responsibilities within the project. No part of project is less important. Whether it is code development or configuration management or quality assurance. If the entire team understands the importance for the same, a lot of usual project management issues get resolved
Filed Under technologyMOM - I made a Birthday Cake for you :-)
I was in the
There was this small girl of around 2 yrs sitting next to us. The girl was there with his grand-pa. She was enjoying playing in the sand. She had a small kit and she was playing with sand and water making things.
After a while, her mom, came to pick her up. She was in the parking lot The girl was overjoyed. She was preparing something out of sand. Till then I did not know what was she making. However after a while she herself told me (I was just sitting near to her) that she was preparing a cake for her mom. She was so happy to see her mom here now that her cake was ready. She also had a small stick as candle for her to blow.
Then came her hurried mom. She came running at her child. I was happy to see, that her mom also so anxious to meet her daughter. However soon I realized that the anxiety is for something else. For the mom, the car was parked in a non-parking zone and she was very worried for the car to be toed away.
She came running at the kid, who was so eager to tell her mom that she made her a b’day cake. The mom, listened to her, quickly, got some smile to please the kid. The kid then asked her mom, to blow and candle and eat the cake and what not. However the mom had the car totally controlling her mind and so she quickly spilled off the mud, got the kid clean and ran away.
The story ends here. I am not writing any conclusions. This is left to everyone’s interpretation.

Pune - Traffic Police
Every day I get out of my home on pune roads, and every day I wish to write this blog. So finally here it comes. I saw a couple of times in the daily news that pune is short of traffic cops and the administration was assuring all attempts to find out ways to cope with these shortage. Finally they came out of this contract schemes where they contract employees from various NGO’s and other places who helps the traffic police manage pune’s ever increasing traffic.
Although this is surely a welcome move, this does not seem to solve the problem though. The volunteers are doing really nice job. But alternatively what is happening is I see now that the traffic cops are now only at the junctions for collecting money (in whatever form) and the actual traffic management is getting done by the contracted employees.
I don’t understand why there should be more than required traffic controllers at the junction. There are a lot of junctions where 1-2 traffic cops just sit on the bike and do negotiations while the other contracted employees do the traffic management.

Had my experience of the first blog/bar camp on saturday. It was really an unconference. However it would have been real cool without those product promos. Rest all was lovely, unique and fun.
My day started there at around 8:45 (one of the few early birds) when the things where just about to start at the venue…..I met sanket, a self-boss. Mechaninal engineer by profession and loved IT guys.. cool…good to know ppl still love them :-).
Met tarun and then headed towards the audi, where rajesh was present to greet us..the zimbra guy,was good to talk to. I offered by helping hand and he asked me to serve the gates :-)… which was fun too… rajesh, sanket, ranjan and myself were standing at the gate and ritika joined us.. She had volunteered for the event. we started with the registration process and distributing the cool blogcamp t-shirts and notepads to the participants.. ranjan was enthu at the beginning to click each one of the them but looking at the crowd later, gave up
The event was getting delayed but I had fun meeting and talking to ppl… there were these gupshup guys who were in true sense the gupshup dudes :-)… Thakkar and the gang were interesting to talk to and we had some nice talks. crowd started pouring in and it was fun to watch different sizes (since we were also distributing t-shirts :-))… Among the unique ones where melody, sakshi and divya uttam who made that presence felt instantly….after about an hour, I started talking with ppl in the audi and met eklavya the watconsult guy… he was also interesting and I had already made up my mind to talk to one/all of these guys. He gave me some interesting information and details.
The fun continued with a round of introductions. Everyone was unique and interesting is what I could observe. Some of them blogged for criket, some for their spouses and some for rakhi sawant and salman khan :-)… some were veteran bloggers with 4-5 yrs of blogging and some of them decided to get birth on that day
Some of them very in their mid-40es while there were a few who were in their teens (15 years to be precise)….All in all you could find almost everyone there
The sessions started with sulekha.com and purplenova presentation. The teams started talking abt their stuff. Although it was good, I would have prefered more experiences and intersting things in all arenas of blogging. I also learnt about OpenId, trackbacks and other stuff talking to people which was an added advantage. Met a big gang from persistent (in fact we realized we were in a majority there). I was also not aware of the fact that persistent is planning to have a bar camp on 7th July in the campus … :-(….
Kiran, jatinder and all informed me about the same. We had some exciting discussions about ruby on rails, and previous bar camps over lunch. The pool side lunch was also wonderful. Session after that was smsgupshup’s thakkar talking abt the product. even though this was again marketing it was done in an interesting manner and hence fun. I had work following me after that and had to run out of the fun…… so that’s Harshal reporting (apart from all those CNN-IBN and DNA reporters….) for his own channel
